Hotel Review: Residence Inn by Marriott Omaha Downtown/Old Market

This hotel must have one of the longest names in the Marriott chain. I’m not sure why there needs to be so many words but there are 🙂

Arrival

I arrived on a very cold weekday. The hotel entrance is located on a one way street with back in angle parking only. Fortunately, there were plenty of spaces available. There was a valet sign but I didn’t see any valet around. I waited for a few minutes to see if one would arrive but one never did. I turned off the car, grabbed my bag, and walked inside the front doors and the valet was standing there, trying to get warm. I can certainly appreciate that but it was a bit confusing. After handing him my keys, I headed up the steps into the “lobby.”

I say “lobby” as it is really a hallway with an elevator bank, entrance to a bar area, and a check in desk. There was no front desk associate when I arrived so I waited around, ensuring that I was visible to the security cameras. After about 3 minutes, the associate showed up. He thanked me for my patience and my status. As a Platinum Elite I was allowed to take any drink out of the fridge and one food item complimentary. He handed me my keys and let me know where I could find the gym and breakfast hours and it was off to my room.

Room

Based on the floor plan, my room was slightly larger than some of the other rooms on the floor. To get in the room, I had to open the door all the way as there was a partial blockage due to the wall configuration. I was immediately in the galley kitchen with a full sized refrigerator/freezer, sink, dishwasher, coffee pot, and the amenities one would need in a kitchen. There was a small bar and bar stool in the kitchen, as well as several outlets (one of which had 2 USB ports).

Immediately beyond the kitchen was a small living room with a sleeper sofa, small end table, and a TV on a small dresser. I found the couch to be fairly comfortable (and the excess of pillows was nice) but the 2 piece cushions continued to slide around making a bit of a cavern between the two of them.

Beyond the living room was a bathroom with separate closet. The bathroom was in good shape with a quartz counter top, 2 bars of soap, and some lotion. The shower was a tub/shower combo and contained the Paul Mitchell shampoo and conditioner.

Past the bathroom was a door to the bedroom. The bedroom had a king bed centered along one wall, windows flanking the wall opposite the bed and the wall opposite the door. Each window had both a roll down privacy screen and a roll down blackout shade that worked well. There was only a central thermostat in the kitchen area so the bedroom was palpably a few degrees cooler. The bed had a sheet and a fairly robust duvet so I didn’t feel too cool at night (the alternative was roasting in the living room/kitchen).

Other Amenities

The gym was located in the basement of the building. Also in the basement was a game room and a coin operated laundry room. There appeared to be about 3 washers and 3 driers, although I did not enter that room.

The gym was much better than I anticipated, given the budget friendly hotel. There was a single Life Fitness universal type machine (that functioned), a bench for free weights or use in the Life Fitness machine, several stability balls, a television (with easily accessible remote), a rack of dumbbells from 5 pounds to 50 pounds, some stationary bikes, treadmill, and an elliptical machine. The gym also had a water machine as well as towels for use in the gym. The two times I was in the gym it was not busy. I did not utilize the pool.

The game room may be my favorite amenity at any hotel I’ve been at. It was more than a novelty to me; it really had some nostalgia. There were board games, gaming consoles (remotes available at the desk), a poker table (!), a shuffleboard type table, an Avengers pinball machine, and best of all, an arcade game with 40 different games to choose from. I may have gotten high score on games such as Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Burgertime, and Dig Dug :). I spent more time in that room than I had intended.

Lounge

There is no lounge at this property. Breakfast was held in a common room and had a good selection of food. There was waffles, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, tea, coffee, fruit juices, fresh fruit, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon. It was a typical hotel breakfast but definitely filling.

Location

The location was very convenient. The building is right downtown within easy walking distance of several restaurants. Also within a few blocks is Old Market, a great part of downtown Omaha known for its art scene, great restaurants, and local shops.

Overall

Overall, I enjoyed this property. The room was good, the gym was better than expected, breakfast was fine, and the game room was awesome. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again.
